Thousands of animals have perished in Katrina's wake because animal protection agents were forced to sit idly by, waiting for permission from authorities to enter flooded areas. In a tragic series of events, the U.S. government has failed animals in the Gulf states miserably, going so far as to order some people to abandon their animals under threat of arrest and even violence. We must learn from this failure and work to ensure that such horrors never recur.
